Heliotrope_GH, a Grasshopper plug-in for calculating solar position and exposure. (A parallel project will implement commands for use in python as well.)
This tool calculates solar position at specific dates and times. Use it to create solar-aware design: to align geometry, position rendering lights, or analyze incident sun on structures. Future releases will add additional analysis components and significantly expand the tool's capabilities. Now in beta, this first release will automagically expire after 12/21/2011. Please return here for updates.
The Grasshopper module implements 6 components (to be found in the Heliotrope group under the Extras tab):
- Calculators:
- Solar calculator: calculates solar position and generates a vector pointing towards the sun for a given date, time, and location.
- Sunrise: calculates time and solar position at sunrise for given date and location.
- Solar Noon: calculates time and solar position at solar noon for given date and location.
- Sunset: calculates time and solar position at sunset for given date and location.
- Associated utility components:
- Date: a converter from numeric values to time and date strings for input into the calculators.
- Now: generates current date and time string for input into the calculators.
I have tested this project, but it is the first release and it might contain still bugs (no way). Please use it "as is", it does not come with warranties. I spent a lot of time developing the logic and implementing it, please give credit where credit is due.
To install:
- In Grasshopper, choose File > Special Folders > Components folder. Save the gha file there.
- Right-click the file > Properties > make sure there is no "blocked" text
- Restart Rhino and Grasshopper
